Make Sandwiches

Making sandwiches for The Sandwich Project of MN is easy.

Be sure to check out the instructions before you begin. Then, sign up for a date to drop off sandwiches, shop for the supplies, make sandwiches and deliver to the specified community partner.

Note: You can make sandwiches prior to dropping off: they need to be kept frozen or refrigerated (for a few says) at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and remember to sign up for the date you plan on delivering.

If you have a corporate or larger team event, making more than 500 sandwiches, please consider signing up for more than one date in the same week/same day to split up the sandwiches. For anything different from this, message us, as we can consider on a case by case basis.

Instructions

See instructions below – you will be choosing one of our partners, purchasing sandwich supplies yourself and delivering directly to the organization, all of which are near downtown/South Minneapolis (2 partners are located in St. Paul).

Location/Day/Partner

  1. Choose the location/partner you wish to donate sandwiches to.
  2. View the SignUpGenius link and pick your date(s) to make and deliver sandwiches. Keep in mind you can sign up for more than one date.
  3. Sign up through SignUpGenius and plan your sandwich making.
  4. On the link you will see: Where to go (address), what time to deliver, who to contact & how many sandwiches to make. Please contact the location ONLY for delivery issues – if you need anything else please contact us at info@thesandwichprojectmn.org.
  5. If you need to cancel please cancel via SignUpGenius & contact the location/partner directly to let them know if possible. If you simply need to change your date, please do so on SignUpGenius and attempt to make the change as far in advance as possible.

Ingredients

  1. White or Wheat bread
  2. Deli meat – any kind except for pork (turkey bologna works well) – 2 slices per sandwich – please label the outside of the loaf bag with what type of meat if possible. NOTE: NACC requests Peanut Butter & Jelly as they give fresh sandwiches twice per week.
  3. American Cheese
    1. No condiments needed
    2. Use the “ends” of the loaf when possible
  4. Zippered Sandwich Bags
  5. Do the math
    1. Bread – most loaves are either 22 or 24 slices in each loaf – count when you are planning. Note loaves are smaller now so be sure to count – if there are 20 pieces of bread that’s only 10 sandwiches per loaf.
    2. Cheese – it is variable – some grocery stores sell the large packs. Tip: buy the cheese without the individual plastic wrapping – much easier to handle!
    3. Meat – most packs are 16 slices to a pack, so 8 sandwiches per pack.
    4. Example: for 200 sandwiches, using bread with 24 slices, you would need 16.67 loaves of bread (purchase 17), 25 packs of meat, 200 slices of cheese and 200 baggies.
  6. You might have extra or are short a few pieces of something – not to worry, just do your best and if you have to make a sandwich or two with one piece of meat, go ahead. Also make “cheese only” sandwiches if you run out of meat.

Process

  1. Place 2 slices of meat and 1 slice of cheese between two slices of bread (remember, use the ends if possible). If you have enough meat and cheese for 1 slice at the end of your sandwich making, use that – one slice is better than nothing.
  2. Place the sandwich in a zippered sandwich bag.
  3. Place all sealed sandwiches back into the bread loaf bag – use the twist tie to fasten.
  4. Store at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, or freeze, in preparation to deliver to the specific partner.
  5. Use boxes or grocery bags to deliver to the partner location you chose.
  6. Deliver on the specified date and time.
  7. Enjoy the process – you are helping people in need!

Safety

  1. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds prior to starting.
  2. Use plastic gloves when possible.
  3. Wash your surface prior to making sandwiches – use plastic/disposable table coverings when possible.
  4. If your hair is not pulled back, please consider wearing a hair net.

Covid-19 Precautions

  1. If you have been in contact with anyone with Covid-19 or have Covid-19, please refrain from making sandwiches until you have had a negative test and have quarantined for the suggested amount of time. Check the CDC for more information.
  2. If you have been vaccinated (either one or both shots), or have not been vaccinated, please wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth if you are with people not in your immediate household.
  3. If you have cold or flu-like symptoms, please do not make sandwiches.
  4. If you have a temperature above normal (98.6) please do not make sandwiches.
